et al. 1993, Wassenaar and Hobson 1998, Miller et al. 2010, 2012, Flockhart et al. 2013), while those that overwinter along the coast of California emerged from natal habitats west of the Rocky Mountains (Urquhart and Urquhart 1977, Nagano et al. 1993, Wenner and Harris 1993, Dingle et al. 2005, Stevens and Frey 2010). However, recent studies suggest that there may be significant interchange between the eastern and western populations (Brower and Pyle 2004, Dingle et al. 2005), consistent with the observation that these two populations are genetically panmictic at all tested loci (Shephard et al. 2002, Lyons et al. 2012). Although these populations have geographically distant (albeit climatically similar) overwintering grounds, the degree of overlap in their natal ranges remains unclear. Compared to the eastern population (Wassenaar and Hobson 1998, Miller et al. 2010, Flockhart et al. 2013), the natal origins of the western overwintering population remain surprisingly uncertain (Nagano et al. 1993, Wenner and Harris 1993, Dingle et al. 2005, Stevens and Frey 2010). Genetic Factors and Host Traits Predict Spore Morphology for a Butterfly Pathogen
Monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) throughout the world are commonly infected by the specialist pathogen Ophryocystis elektroscirrha (OE). This protozoan is transmitted when larvae ingest infectious stages (spores) scattered onto host plant leaves by infected adults. Parasites replicate internally during larval and pupal stages, and adult monarchs emerge covered with millions of dormant spo...
متن کاملMigratory Connectivity of the Monarch Butterfly (Danaus plexippus): Patterns of Spring Re-Colonization in Eastern North America
Each year, millions of monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) migrate up to 3000 km from their overwintering grounds in central Mexico to breed in eastern North America. Malcolm et al. (1993) articulated two non-mutually exclusive hypotheses to explain how Monarchs re-colonize North America each spring. The 'successive brood' hypothesis proposes that monarchs migrate from Mexico to the Gulf Coa...
متن کاملMonarch butterflies cross the Appalachians from the west to recolonize the east coast of North America.
Each spring, millions of monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) migrate from overwintering sites in Mexico to recolonize eastern North America. However, few monarchs are found along the east coast of the USA until mid-summer. Brower (Brower, L. P. 1996 J. Exp. Biol. 199, 93-103.) proposed that east coast recolonization is accomplished by individuals migrating from the west over the Appalachians...
متن کاملDo Healthy Monarchs Migrate Farther? Tracking Natal Origins of Parasitized vs. Uninfected Monarch Butterflies Overwintering in Mexico
Long-distance migration can lower parasite prevalence if strenuous journeys remove infected animals from wild populations. We examined wild monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) to investigate the potential costs of the protozoan Ophryocystis elektroscirrha on migratory success. We collected monarchs from two wintering sites in central Mexico to compare infection status with hydrogen isotope (...
متن کاملDensity estimates of monarch butterflies overwintering in central Mexico
Given the rapid population decline and recent petition for listing of the monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus L.) under the Endangered Species Act, an accurate estimate of the Eastern, migratory population size is needed. Because of difficulty in counting individual monarchs, the number of hectares occupied by monarchs in the overwintering area is commonly used as a proxy for population size, w...
